Gastroenteritis is challenging to diagnose due to the overlapping symptoms across different pathogens. Diarrheal diseases affect around 1.7 billion children annually worldwide, with approximately 525,000 deaths each year in children under 5, particularly in developing countries. Rotavirus, adenovirus, and astrovirus are key contributors to these diseases. Rotaviruses are a leading cause of severe gastroenteritis in young children, causing over 200,000 deaths annually despite the availability of vaccines. Adenoviruses, with over 84 genotypes, can cause gastrointestinal infections, especially serotypes 40 and 41. Astroviruses are common in children, elderly, and immunosuppressed individuals, causing watery diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Norovirus GI and GII, along with sapovirus, also lead to gastroenteritis outbreaks.
