Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative, comma-shaped, facultative anaerobic bacterium responsible for cholera, a severe intestinal disease primarily affecting the upper small intestine. Transmitted through contaminated water or food, cholera causes acute watery diarrhea—often described as “rice-water” stools—along with vomiting, rapid dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance. In severe cases, symptoms can progress to leg cramps, shock, coma, and even death if not treated promptly. Cholera remains a serious public health concern, especially in regions with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. Among the over 200 known serogroups of V. cholerae, only O1 and O139 are linked to epidemic and pandemic outbreaks.
