Helicobacter pylori, a gram-negative, spiral-shaped, microaerophilic bacterium from the family Helicobacteraceae, infects nearly 50% of the global population. It causes chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and contributes to about 89% of gastric cancers. Symptoms include nausea, bloating, burping, appetite loss, and weight loss. Persistent infection can lead to atrophic gastritis, ulcers, gastric cancer, or MALT lymphoma. Transmission occurs via oral-oral or fecal-oral routes, often through contaminated food or water. H. pylori is the only bacterium classified as a class 1 carcinogen and is linked to anemia, cardiovascular, and neurological conditions, while potentially offering protection against asthma and IBD.
