Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a small, defective, negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus classified under the genus Deltavirus within Ribozyviria. Eight HDV genotypes have been identified globally, with genotype 1 being most common; genotypes 2 and 4 cause mild disease in East Asia, genotype 3 causes severe hepatitis in South America, and genotypes 5–8 are found only in Africa. It requires co-infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) to replicate, making it a satellite virus. HDV infection leads to liver inflammation and increases the risk of severe complications such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Transmission occurs only in individuals already infected with HBV. Symptoms resemble other acute viral hepatitis infections, including fever, fatigue, nausea, jaundice, and, in severe cases, fulminant hepatitis.
