Intent to use:
Hepatitis E is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV), a non-enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus of the Hepeviridae family. It is responsible for nearly 50% of acute viral hepatitis cases in developing regions, spreading primarily through contaminated water. HEV often presents with symptoms such as jaundice, fatigue, nausea, and loss of appetite. While often asymptomatic, HEV can cause jaundice, nausea, and fatigue; pregnant women face a high mortality risk (10–40%). Chronic infections may arise in immunocompromised individuals. HEV genotypes 1-4 are linked to human disease, with genotypes 1 and 2 endemic in Asia and Africa, and genotypes 3 and 4 seen in developed countries. Neurological and renal complications, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and glomerulonephritis, have also been associated with HEV.
