Waterborne viral diseases, such as Hepatitis A (HAV) and Hepatitis E (HEV), pose significant public health risks globally. These non-enveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses spread primarily through the fecal-oral route, often via contaminated water, food, or close contact with infected individuals. While both viruses share common symptoms—jaundice, fatigue, nausea, and loss of appetite—they can also be asymptomatic. HAV typically causes acute liver disease without leading to chronic infection, whereas HEV can cause severe complications, particularly in pregnant women, with a high mortality rate. HAV has six genotypes, and HEV has four, each associated with different patterns of disease.
