Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), also known as human herpesvirus 4, is a widespread member of the herpesvirus family and a major cause of infectious mononucleosis. Primary EBV infection typically presents with fever, sore throat, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and splenomegaly. While often self-limiting, EBV can establish lifelong latency in B cells and reactivate under immune suppression. In immunocompromised individuals, reactivation can lead to severe complications including post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD), Hodgkin lymphoma, Burkitt’s lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and central nervous system involvement. EBV has also been linked to autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis. Early and accurate detection is essential for diagnosis, monitoring, and disease management.
