Often asymptomatic in early stages, especially in women, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, or facilitate HIV transmission if left untreated. The bacterium primarily infects mucous membranes of the urethra, cervix, rectum, throat, and eyes.
