The DiAGSure® Sickle Cell Anemia Detection Kit is a real-time PCR assay developed for the accurate detection of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the β-globin gene (HBB) that results in sickle cell anemia. This specific A→T transversion at codon 6 leads to the substitution of valine for glutamic acid, producing abnormal hemoglobin S (HbS). The structural change in red blood cells causes them to assume a rigid, sickle shape—leading to vaso-occlusion, chronic anemia, pain crises, and organ damage. The kit enables precise genotyping of this SNP, distinguishing between homozygous disease (HbSS), heterozygous carriers (HbAS), and normal individuals. Early detection is essential for newborn screening, prenatal diagnostics, and population-based carrier programs.
