In pregnant women, CMV can lead to congenital CMV, causing birth defects like hearing loss, vision problems, and developmental delays in new-borns. The virus is particularly concerning for immunocompromised individuals, such as organ transplant recipients and those with HIV/AIDS, as it can cause severe complications like pneumonia or organ failure.
