Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are members of the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily within the Herpesviridae family. HSV-1 typically causes oral herpes, manifesting as cold sores or fever blisters, while HSV-2 primarily leads to genital herpes. However, both types can infect either region through direct contact with infected secretions. These viruses establish lifelong latency in nerve cells and can reactivate, causing recurrent infections. Symptoms range from painful blisters and ulcers to fever and swollen lymph nodes, with some infections remaining asymptomatic. HSV is especially concerning in immunocompromised individuals and during pregnancy, as neonatal transmission can have severe consequences.
