However, both types can infect either region through direct contact with infected secretions. These viruses establish lifelong latency in nerve cells and can reactivate, causing recurrent infections. Symptoms range from painful blisters and ulcers to fever and swollen lymph nodes, with some infections remaining asymptomatic. HSV is especially concerning in immunocompromised individuals and during pregnancy, as neonatal transmission can have severe consequences.
