Campylobacter jejuni is a gram-negative, curved, rod-shaped, microaerophilic, motile, non-spore-forming, zoonotic bacterium in the family Campylobacteriaceae. It is the leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis, responsible for 90% of human infections or Campylobacteriosis accounting for 5–14% of diarrhoea cases globally. Transmitted via undercooked poultry, unpasteurized milk, contaminated water, or contact with infected animals, symptoms appear within 2–5 days and include fever, abdominal cramps, headache, vomiting, and watery or bloody diarrhoea lasting about a week. A prodromal phase may involve rigors, body aches, and dizziness. While most infections are self-limiting, severe cases can lead to complications like Guillain-Barré syndrome, reactive arthritis, or Miller Fisher syndrome.
