Adenoviruses (HAdVs) are non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses from the Adenoviridae family, with 51 serotypes classified into seven species (HAdV-A to HAdV-G). These viruses cause a range of infections, including respiratory diseases (HAdV-B and C), conjunctivitis (HAdV-B and D), and gastroenteritis (HAdV-F serotypes 40 and 41). Enteric adenoviruses (HAdV-F 40 and 41), are a significant cause of gastroenteritis in children under 2 years old. Symptoms include watery diarrhoea, vomiting, low-grade fever, and mild dehydration, often with prolonged diarrhoea. These viruses are transmitted through the fecal-oral route and are second only to rotaviruses in causing childhood diarrhoea.
