Giardia and Cryptosporidium are protozoan parasites commonly responsible for intestinal infections, particularly in areas with poor sanitation. Giardia lamblia (also G. intestinalis or G. duodenalis) is a flagellated protozoan from the phylum Metamonada, while Cryptosporidium spp., including C. hominis and C. parvum, belong to the phylum Apicomplexa. Both are transmitted via the fecal-oral route through contaminated water, food, or contact with infected individuals or animals. Giardiasis causes watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, bloating, flatulence, nausea, and weight loss. Cryptosporidiosis presents with similar symptoms, especially watery diarrhoea and stomach pain, and can become severe in immunocompromised individuals.
